Poetry in Movement

Discover Your Body’s Voice Through Poetic Text

A chill from head to toe
Like the wind that swiftly blows
A hand that reaches down
Like a touch in your soul
A feeling to move
Like a child in the silence
A wonderful love
Like a mother with her child

Not easy to explain
Not east to tell
The experience is yours to understand

Shelby Smith

A 6-week lab held in Amsterdam in August/September 2025 and led to the final mini-performance.

What does it mean to move poetically?

How does the rhythm of a poem echo in the body?

What happens when movement becomes verse?

Poetry in Movement is a creative journey exploring the meeting point between poetic text and embodied expression — culminating in a shared performance evening in Amsterdam.

In this process-oriented lab, we engaged with the textures of poems — some written by others, perhaps some that emerge from us — and let them breathe through the body.

What do people who joined have in common? They:

  • enjoy creative experimentation in a supportive group;
  • want to deepen the connection between text and physical presence;
  • are curious about staging your own embodied voice—no prior dance or acting needed.

There was no need to be a dancer or a poet — just curious about how the body speaks.

We moved together, read together, and co-created something both delicate and brave.

Moments from the workshop process

  • What Participants Say

It felt as if this course was made just for me. A Dutch folk song had been living inside me for years, and I longed to share it the way I feel and understand it. This workshop helped me release it — to give it a voice and my own interpretation. Irina is an incredibly sensitive and tactful guide; creating with her feels easy and joyful. The exercises she offered helped me express exactly what I wanted. It’s an amazing feeling to finally let out something that has lived inside for so long. I’m deeply grateful — and I’ll definitely come again!

    Nata, Amsterdam

It was an amazing experience. Being my first attempt, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I truly enjoyed it. I felt a surge of emotions — I never imagined that words could be conveyed through movement. The poem I chose, together with the movement and atmosphere, felt so complementary that I was completely fulfilled. With limited resources, we were still able to express our inner selves — everything was perfect.

    Gunay, Den Haag

I enjoyed that the process was guided, yet we could also learn from and contribute to each other’s work. I learned to work more deeply with poetry by inviting space, movement, and voice — and discovered how these elements can completely change its meaning.

    Week-By-Week Journey

Here’s our week-by-week journey — open to explore what we do each day.

Day 1 - Entering the world of the poem

Meet the group & warm-up with voice and movement

    • Share your chosen poem (or poems) and hear others' stories
    • Reflect together and gather inspiration from each other
    • Creative homework: connect your poem with an image or drawing

🧭 A great session to set the tone.

Day 2 - Embodied writing & image work

    • Free-writing and visual reflections on your poem
    • Explore how your poem or image lives in your body
    • Create your first personal movement phrase
    • Reflect through movement and draw what’s changing

🧭 A deep self-reflective session — can be caught up through solo guidance.

Day 3 - Moving the words

    • Work with rhythm, phrasing, and gestures in your poem
    • Sense the “speaking words” and bring them into physicality
    • Explore how a word becomes a gesture, a phrase, a story
    • Partner reflections and movement discovery

🧭 Important for shaping the personal movement language of your poem.

Day 4 - Shaping space and building structure

    • Explore spatial design through movement and voice
    • Transform images into lines, shapes, and pathways
    • Start creating structured sequences from what you’ve discovered
    • Try your piece with a partner and reflect together

🧭 Recommended to attend — this is where pieces begin to take form.

    Day 5 - Trial run & feedback

    • Organize your material into a trial performance piece
    • Practice, reflect, receive supportive feedback
    • Explore how your poem and movement relate — layered or separate
    • Choose title words and refine phrasing

🧭 A crucial step toward the final sharing — but we’ll support those who miss it.

    Day 6 - Rehearsal & final shaping

    • Personal coaching, group run-through, final adjustments
    • Discuss lights, music, costumes, and what connects our pieces
    • Prepare for the collective sharing

🧭 Last rehearsal — ideal to attend fully if you're participating in the performance.

This helped those who knew they would miss one or two sessions.

Of course, it’s best to be present every time, but life happens.

In case of a missed session, I guided participants on how to catch up on their own, and the group would welcome you back with context.

    Testimonials

From Those Who’ve Joined Other Workshops Before

It was definitely a unique experience. I could emerge into myself, my interactions with others, and creative process without pressure or judgement or critique.

Daria, participant in 'Short Stories' project

I absolutely loved our warm-ups. At some point during them, I’d suddenly realize I was truly breathing for the first time all day — and then I’d start laughing.
Almost every time, I left rehearsal feeling lighter, happier, like the weight of everyday life had been lifted from my shoulders.

Peter, participant in 'Short Stories' project

I noticed, I began to feel better in myself — more confident, more in touch with my body and with my thoughts and impulses.
Without a doubt, I’ll recommend this to friends — and I’ll come back myself.”

Paul, participant in 'Short Stories' project
